[updated June 2026]
There are over 40,000 driving instructors in the UK and almost every one of them will eventually be affected by the UK Government intention to “make tax digital”. For many it will mean a massive change in how they operate their business. Instead of using whatever record keeping system they want and then manually entering those figures once a year to their self-assessment tax form either on paper or online, they will find themselves shoe-horned into a new self assessment tax system. While many instructors will do their own accounting, others will be looking for a specialist driving instructors accountant.
Making Tax Digital for Driving Instructors: What It Means and How to Prepare
The UK’s Making Tax Digital (MTD) programme is reshaping the way self‑employed individuals manage their tax responsibilities. Instead of relying on paper records or manual submissions (often used by driving instructors), HMRC is moving towards a fully digital system designed to reduce errors, improve accuracy, and give taxpayers a clearer view of their financial position throughout the year.
What Is Making Tax Digital?
Making Tax Digital is a government initiative aimed at modernising the tax system. For the self‑employed, it means keeping digital records of income and expenses and submitting tax information through approved software. The traditional annual Self Assessment return will be replaced by more frequent digital updates, giving a more up‑to‑date picture of your tax position.
When Does It Start?
MTD is being introduced in stages. VAT‑registered businesses are already required to follow MTD rules. For self‑employed individuals (and most driving instructors are self employed), from April 2026, those driving instructors earning over £50,000 will need to join the system. In April 2027, the requirement extends to those earning between £30,000 and £50,000. HMRC has not yet set a date for those earning below £30,000. This refers to your profit at the end of the year and not just your turnover (which will be higher than your profit).
Do I need a driving instructors accountant?
The short answer is that you do not HAVE to have an accountant to do your driving school accounts. However for many instructors a specialised accountant for driving instructors may be the best route to go down. If you are looking top do all the work yourself, you may look for driving instructor accounts software. In fact any basic MTD compatible software will do. You do not need to have special software limited to driving instructors.
How the New System Works
Under MTD for Income Tax, you will keep digital records throughout the year and send quarterly updates to HMRC. After each update, HMRC will provide an estimated tax calculation based on the information submitted. At the end of the tax year, you will complete a final declaration to confirm your figures. This replaces the single annual tax return and spreads reporting more evenly across the year.
What You Need to Comply
To meet MTD requirements, you will need software that is compatible with HMRC’s digital system. Many popular accounting platforms already support MTD, and most offer tools for recording income, tracking expenses, and submitting updates directly to HMRC. You will also need to maintain digital records, either by entering information manually or by using features such as bank feeds and receipt‑scanning apps.
Preparing for the Change
The best approach is to prepare early. Choosing your software well before the deadline gives you time to get used to it and ensure your records are accurate. Digitising receipts and invoices, reviewing how you categorise expenses, and linking your bank account to your software can all help streamline the process. If you work with an accountant or bookkeeper, it’s worth checking that they are ready for MTD and can support you through the transition.
Exemptions
Some individuals may qualify for an exemption from MTD. This applies in cases where digital tools cannot reasonably be used due to age, disability, or issues such as poor internet access. Exemptions are not automatic and must be approved by HMRC.
The Bigger Picture
Making Tax Digital represents a significant shift, but it also offers benefits. With more frequent updates and clearer information, self‑employed individuals can manage their finances with greater confidence. The move to digital record‑keeping reduces the risk of mistakes and makes it easier to stay organised throughout the year. For many, the transition will ultimately lead to a smoother, more predictable tax experience for driving instructors.
