Is your Health a Priority?

I spent many years as a driving instructor thinking that I didn’t have time to look after my health. Now, looking back, I wish I had made time. I currently have a problem with prolapsed disks, caused at least in part I’m sure by my sitting position in the car. The exercise I am now doing are definitely helping, but I do wish that I had looked after myself a bit more in the midst of the daily stress of being a driving instructor.

Using driving lesson plans and diagrams can help you to deliver great lessons

Here we have some thoughts and tips that could help you. Whether you are a PDI starting out on your journey, or a seasoned instructor, this is relevant to you. Making room for a few exercises per day could lengthen your career as well as your general sense of wellbeing.

The Physical Demands of the Job

Posture & Musculoskeletal Health

Spending hours in the passenger seat can lead to:
• Lower‑back pain
• Neck and shoulder tension

Practical strategies
• Adjust your seat for lumbar support and keep your hips level with or slightly above your knees.
• Take a 2–3 minute stretch break between lessons — hip flexor stretches, shoulder rolls, and gentle neck mobility exercises make a big difference.
• Consider a portable lumbar cushion or wedge if your teaching car doesn’t offer enough support.
• Keep frequently used items (tablet, diary, water bottle) within easy reach to avoid repetitive twisting.

Eye Health
Constant scanning, mirror checks, and screen use (sat nav, diary apps) can cause eye fatigue.
Try the 20‑20‑20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

2. Mental & Emotional Wellbeing

Managing Cognitive Load
Instructors juggle:
• Safety-critical decision-making
• Lesson planning
• Student anxiety
• Traffic unpredictability
• Business admin

This constant mental load can lead to fatigue and reduced patience.

Helpful habits
• Build a 10–15 minute buffer between lessons to reset.
• Keep your diary realistic — back‑to‑back lessons all day, every day, is a fast track to burnout.
